The cup of blessing
The blessing over the cup is thanksgiving to God for His provision. The sermon traces this through the Passover and into Christ’s words about His blood, shed for the remission of sins.
Participation expresses fellowship
Paul contrasts the Lord’s table with idolatrous worship. What we participate in expresses association and allegiance. Communion directs our thanksgiving and fellowship toward Jesus.
More than remembrance alone
The Lord’s supper recalls Christ’s sacrifice and also reminds us of the fellowship we can enjoy with Him every day. He remains our Savior, Lord, intercessor, and friend beyond the moment of observing communion.
One bread and one body
Believers share life in Christ and therefore belong to one another. The local gathering expresses that shared relationship. Love for Christ includes love for His people.
Four directions to look
Look back to the cross, around to Christ’s body, within at your fellowship with Him, and ahead to His return. Each direction helps us approach the Lord’s table with gratitude and purpose.
