Beyond the Ash Heap

Starting a four-week walk through Job’s friends — Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar, and, later, the younger Elihu — this lesson introduces all four before focusing on the eldest, Eliphaz, the voice of experience. His theology was often sound: he understood that God is righteous and that sin has consequences. His error was in the application — reasoning backward from Job’s suffering to a sin Job must have committed, then turning suspicion into specific, evidence-free accusations by his third speech.

The takeaway is a practical one: don’t interpret someone else’s suffering solely through the lens of your own experience. Eliphaz had every chance to be a real encouragement to a hurting friend and instead became one more voice Job had to endure.
