Beyond the Ash Heap: A Study in the Book of Job

Trust God When You Don’t Understand: Elihu’s Answer

Elihu, the limits of human counsel, and trusting God through suffering

Recorded

Job 32–37; Deuteronomy 32:4; Hebrews 11:6; Psalm 119:71; Proverbs 3:5–6

Elihu’s view of God

Elihu enters after Job’s other friends have spoken. The lesson outlines Job 32–37 around God speaking, God’s grace, His justice, and His greatness. True wisdom comes from God rather than age alone.

What Elihu got right—and what he could not know

Elihu challenges the accusations against God’s character and introduces suffering as a possible means of instruction. Yet he does not possess the full explanation for Job’s circumstances. Good counsel still has limits.

Four responses to unanswered questions

Trust God’s justice, continue in faithful obedience, ask what He may teach you, and remain humble about what you do not know. The closing appeal from Proverbs 3:5–6 is to trust who God is even when His work is difficult to understand.
